Virtual Tape Library (VTL) 

A data storage virtualization technology used for backup and recovery purposes. A VTL emulates a tape library and tape drives, but stores data on disk storage media. This approach combines the advantages of disk storage with the familiar interface and data management techniques of tape libraries.
